Rickshaw Driver Style

Here is a photo that didn't make the cut for our Kyoto posts. It is a rickshaw driver that we saw near the entrance to the Silver Palace.

Everything about this guy signals that he plans to go fast. Very. Fast.

From his lycra cycling gear and booties, the watch that will tell him whether he exceeded his personal best time, to the low wind resistance headband and his muscular legs.

Not to mention the facial expression of singular focus.

If rickshaw races were an olympic sport, I have no doubt that he would be in contention.

Awesome photo! I get the feeling he does it for the love of cycling (not for the tips).

  • Diana replied 12 years ago

Awesome! Did you guys take a rickshaw ride while you were there?

  • MsMary replied 12 years ago

Oh, wow! Great photo and your commentary makes it even better!!

  • Greg replied 12 years ago

Diana, no, unfortunately not. From the looks of things it would have been a fun ride.

  • Diana replied 12 years ago

Too bad, Greg. Looks like it would be fun, esp. with this guy as your driver!

When I visited Bangkok many years ago, rickshaws were all over the place (including some that were powered by motorcycle) as a form of transportation (not just a tourist thing) but it seemed really scary as they drove like maniacs through the busy highways and didn't seem to obey any traffic laws. I'm sure rickshaw rides in Japan are much more civilized!

What a great photo Greg! The guy has the same look on his face I have seen on many athletes right before they are about to perform/compete.

People still do this? Such a different part of the world. You can tell I don't get around the globe much!!!

  • Jonesy replied 12 years ago

Fab! Love those calf muscles, and that look of determination on his face!

  • ironkurtin replied 12 years ago

In game terms, this guy is a BADASS!!!

  • rachylou replied 12 years ago

    LOL. He looks SERIOUS.

  • Greg replied 12 years ago

*That's* the word I was looking for! :-)

  • Transcona Shannon replied 12 years ago

I hope his rickshaw comes with a seat belt!

  • Kari replied 12 years ago

And quite a fancy looking rickshaw too!

  • christieanne replied 12 years ago

I wouldn't want to get in his way!

  • Sveta replied 12 years ago

  • sarah replied 12 years ago

Love this - check out those calves...

  • nicoleb replied 12 years ago

I wish i were friends with him. And not just for the free rides.

    ...wait...that sounds weird.

As a photographer myself, I'm interested to know Greg what camera you are are using and all your favourite glass! :)

  • Suz replied 12 years ago

Fantastic photo, Greg! And what a subject!! I want to go biking with this guy.

  • ManidipaM replied 12 years ago

Okay, so NOT my neighbourhood rickshaw-wallah! Even though his steed is identical to the ones back home, except the ones here are generally far more rundown and, er, less restrained in their decoration. I'd love to have his shoes!

Diana, I know exactly what you mean about mad rickshaw pulling! That's what we have too, and it is downright scary. For shorter distances, which are the norm here as rickshaws ply on restricted routes, I actually prefer to walk rather than take a rick ride! (San, now you know --- this beast ain't at all dead yet!)

Wonder why no governments have ever enforced belts on rickshaw riders, a la Shannon, and for better-off communities, a biking helmet for the driver?

Thanks so much for this, Greg! Loved it.

That rickshaw looks like it's regal enough for royalty. That's such an interesting photo, Greg.

  • jayne replied 12 years ago
